Muhyiddin not PM candidate, PAS more suitable to lead PN, says spiritual leader

PAS has denied naming Muhyiddin Yassin as Perikatan Nasional’s prime ministerial candidate in the next general election, stating that the coalition has not decided on the matter.

Responding to Ahmad Faizal Azumu’s remarks about Muhyiddin being PN’s sole nominee for the country’s top position, PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin said Bersatu cannot sideline PAS in determining the candidate for this important position unless it is a mutually agreed decision.

During an interview with Malaysiakini recently, the newly minted Bersatu vice-president said if others in the coalition harbour ambitions to become prime minister, they should stop dreaming.

“I think they should just stop having such ambitions (to become the next premier).

“So far, everyone is backing Muhyiddin, so why should they jeopardise it? It will only undermine our party,” said Faizal.

However, Hashim (above) is rebutting Faizal’s remark, saying that PAS is more suitable to lead the coalition.

Utusan Malaysia quoted him asking Bersatu to acknowledge its shortcomings and accept its current standing.

‘PAS more qualified to lead PN’

“In terms of leadership qualifications, I believe PAS is more suitable to lead. First, we have more seats and stronger grassroots machinery nationwide, so this needs to be seriously considered.

“Although PAS (leaders) only hold deputy positions within PN, our track record in Parliament is more significant, as are our community efforts and other initiatives,” he said.

Hashim added that any decision regarding the top position, should PN win the 16th general election, must be thoroughly deliberated.

He also emphasised that PAS should lead PN, given its qualifications.

“PAS must now lead PN. We have no record of party-hopping, although there are weaknesses. The key issue of party-hopping does not apply to us.

“However, PAS members do not scramble for positions. Based on merit, it is better to hand over PN’s leadership to PAS. Even political analysts see PAS as a priority to lead PN,” he said.
